Very Happy Today I had my third sighting this year of Xanthandrus comtus. Pretty exciting, as before 2007 I had never seen this smart hoverfly. Today (October 14) there were three (at least) males hovering on the edge of broadleaved woodland, at about 10-12 feet height. I caught and inspected two and they were very fresh specimens, so probably quite recently emerged.

Today was by no means good hoverfly weather. It was mild, about 15-16 degrees, but overcast and not at all bright, so I would encourage all to go out and look for hovers, it seems to have been a good year for this species, and there must be more out there!

had X. comtus a few times this year (despite not getting out much). It certainly seems to be on the increase. I was 'doing' hoverflies for about ten years before I saw my first, but they do seem to turn up most years these days.
