Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.

Cheilosia latifrons (Zetterstedt, 1838) Cheilosia intonsa Loew in Stubbs & Falk (1983)

Biology: The larvae of this species remain unknown, but it is thought that they may be associated with Leontodon autumnalis. Adults are found in dry grassland, including coastal grassland and dunes, where they fly low amongst the vegetation. According to Speight (1998) they visits yellow composites, Ranunculus, and anaemophilus flowers such as Plantago and  Luzula

Distribution: Cheilosia intonsa has a widespread, but scattered distribution throughout Britain, although confusion with the recently-separated C. griseiventris may cast doubt over the validity of some records . There are few records north of Yorkshire, in East Anglia or the East Midlands, but many from the London area, including the Thames marshes
