I thought this was arbustorum at first but having doubts. What do you think? Photographed on long disused railway sidings near Peterborough on 17 July 2007. Unfortunately this was the only shot I got and I didn't see it from the front.

Hi Brian,

A pretty picture, but a bit of a tease! It does look like arbustorum, but is the stigma on the left wing long enough? It does look rather small and square, indicating nemorum (interruptus as was), but it is (of course!) the only bit of the picture that is not sharp. However, Stubbs and Falk (2002), page 291, come to the rescue by stating that in female nemorum the orange spots on tergite 2 remain well clear of the hind margin of the tergite. On yours the orange clearly does reach the margin. The jizz also looks just right to me, so I reckon your first identification was correct.

Happy hunting!

John
