Species account from Provisional atlas of British hoverflies, Ball & Morris, 2000.
Volucella pellucens (Linnaeus, 1758)
Biology: The larvae are scavengers and predators on the floor of the nest cavity of social wasps (including the hornet Vespa crabro), where they probably feed on wasp larvae and pupae. It is found in all sorts of woodland and scrub and around large hedgerows. Also occurs in suburban parks and large, mature gardens. Adults are characteristically found visiting a wide range of flowers, but especially Heracleum sphondylium. Males are frequently seen hovering high up in a sunbeam over tracks in woodland rides and glades
Distribution: Widespread and common throughout Britain, especially near woodland or scrub |
