Shocked Hello all.
Am I just being lucky, or are there a lot more hovers this spring than usual? I only look out for them in my garden, but so far I have seen loads of little blackish ones that I can't recall seeing in previous years. And no - sorry, I have no idea what they are!

I can't say it's been a good year numbers-wise, but here in Shropshire there have occasionally been immense numbers of a few small species like Melanostoma and Platycheirus albimanus (which is most likely what your small dark hovers are).

Yes, your description sounds like the Platycheirus albimanus round here in April - really remarkable numbers, though they have dropped away a lot since. There are more Melanstoma scalare around now.

Fingers crossed for a warmer, sunnier mid-season than we had last year.

Happy hunting!

John
