I hope I'm not making a fool of myself but I'm trying to get to grips with these markings & would be very grateful for some more help. Are these bands parallel or moustache shaped ? My impession is the former in which case it might be Epistrophe nitidicollis, although I'm not sure that I would see this in Cumbria.

Hi Mick
Thanks for that advice.
I see S&F says that Syrphus sometimes lacks obvious undulations but that the bands always sweep upwards at the lateral margins, which I think explains my confusion.
As it is a female & appears to have yellow hind femora is it possible to say that it is ribesii/rectus ?
Thanks again
Peter
