Hi all,

This weekend, I went on the two-day non-residential course prepared and presented by Stuart Ball and Roger Morris, at Ring Haw Field Station, Northants. It was a great introduction to the families of the British Diptera. Each of the twelve participants had a box of specimens, representatives of the families, which we worked steadily through using microscopes, guided by Roger and Stuart, and with the aid of a specially prepared new key. There was plenty of other pinned material to refer to, as well as text books, plus useful and well-illustrated handouts. There were hoverflies to look at, of course, but much else besides, including some species which we probably all see regularly while looking for syrphids. I learnt a great deal, and found it very enjoyable, too.

The same course (no doubt benefiting from the experiences of this weekend's guinea pigs!) will be held at Preston Montford in March (see the News section of this website). I can recommend it.

John
