My guess would be Eristalis Tenax, but I'm not 100% sure, and I'm new here, so take that as a maybe! Wink I'm pretty confident it's an Eristalis of some sort...

The second one is probably E tenax. The vital clue, the colour of the front tarsi cannot be seen in either photo, so conclusive id is difficult.

First one is a female E. similis (=pratorum).
Second one is less easy to appreciate, but could be female E. lineata (wing shading and dull T2).

Greetings.

These two last pictures show Eristalis tenax without any doubt.

Regards.

Pretty sure Birderfirst's original photo isn't E. tenax; there's no sign of the characteristic stripes of eye-hairs. Other that that I wouldn't like to say. Sorry to be negative.

I hope everyone's enjoying the huge assemblages of flies on the ivy flowers - the last great feast of the season!

Yes, the Ivy Festival has been really good this year. Hornets and hovers abound on the ivy in the park where I work. Really makes lunch time walks enjoyable.
