I have a few more I'm not sure about and thought I'd post here for your thoughts! (Book still not arrived!) Wink

I assume these first two (which are two angles on the same fly) are a female syrphus but that's as far as I can get...

I'll post a few more in follow up messages...

I think this one is a male syrphus but again that's my limit!

I'm not sure these two shots are the same insect, shot on two different days in the same location, looking at the pictures I think they are of the same fly. I have no idea what it is, not even sure it's a hoverfly but it had that look about it...

My guess :
1,2 : Eupeodes latifasciatus female.
3 : Syrphus sp. female.
4,5 : Xylota sylvarum males.

Regards.

I agree with your IDs Chlophania

Lauriek - I do hope you keep records of where and when you have taken these photos - the records would be useful to the recording scheme (interestingly X. sylvarum seems to have been a bit scarce for me on my travels in the last few years - but not sure this is significant)

Regards

Roger

Thanks again chaps! Looks like I was way out!! Wink

Roger, I do know where (to within a few 10s of meters) all of these were shot and I can date all my photos. I will have to look into this recording scheme! I've quite a few others which I think I've identified okay but I will wait until my book arrives before reporting anything, so I can be as sure as I can about the idents... I presume there's some way of 'mass' reporting a whole load, I don't need to do each fly individually?

Hello Laurek

Yes the easiest way to submit reports is to create an Excel file - with the following headings:

Site name, Species name, Grid reference, date, Recorder, Confirmer (i.e. was the ID given by someone contributing to the site). A further column for the sex and another for any notes such as record backed up by photo.

Beware placing too much relience on illustration sin Stubbs & Falk - only about 30% can be done reliably by illustrations and even then only with experience.

However, I think most of your material so far can probably be done by getting one of us to look at photos.

Regards

Roger
